BII strengthens focus on societal resilience through integration of quantum activities

Denmark is set to solidify its position as a global leader within deep tech and quantum technology, with the BioInnovation Institute (BII) at the forefront of driving this transformation. Thus, BII is renaming Deep Tech Lab – Quantum to BII Quantum Lab in collaboration with DIANA to strategically strengthen its focus on societal resilience and quantum technologies as a core pillar in its mission of bringing science to life.

In 2023, the Danish government appointed BII to operate Deep Tech Lab – Quantum, a NATO-supported accelerator program that fosters innovation in quantum technology and science. The program specializes in ‘dual-use technologies’ that have applications in both civilian and military sectors. With this rebranding, BII is now integrating quantum technology into its broader strategy, with an emphasis on how these innovations can contribute to building stronger, more resilient societies.

“Quantum technology holds tremendous potential to address society’s most pressing challenges, from cybersecurity to climate change and healthcare,” says Jens Nielsen, CEO of BII and adds: “By focusing on societal resilience, we are committed to leveraging quantum and deep tech innovations to create solutions that not only drive technological advancement but also help communities and nations better withstand adversity and thrive in the face of global challenges.”

Nielsen highlighted key developments in Denmark’s deep tech and quantum ecosystem, including the Novo Nordisk Foundation’s billion-dollar investment to build Denmark’s first fully functional quantum computer. This, coupled with the government’s national quantum strategy, creates a robust framework for BII to continue fostering advancements that directly benefit society and strengthen national security.

“We believe that societal resilience must be at the heart of how we approach quantum technologies,” Nielsen continued. “By supporting innovative start-ups and projects through BII Quantum Lab, we aim to catalyze solutions that promote security, sustainability, and improved quality of life for people around the world.”

As part of its long-term strategy, BII aims to onboard several deep tech and quantum technology start-ups going forward, contributing to the development of a even stronger quantum and deep tech ecosystem in Denmark.
